History

R. Stahl was founded in 1876 in Stuttgart, Germany as a machine factory. In the early 20th century the company specialized in explosion-proof electrical equipment for the emerging mining and chemical industries. Increasing safety legislation for hazardous environments in the mid-20th century drove enormous company growth. From the 1960s to the 1980s R. Stahl grew into a European leader in ATEX-certified equipment. The company invested heavily in certification and technical expertise, becoming a trusted partner for major international oil and gas companies and petrochemical businesses. Strategic acquisitions of specialized explosion protection companies strengthened the product portfolio. Today R. What is the difference between ATEX zone 1 and zone 2?
Zone 1 is an area where an explosive gas atmosphere is present or may periodically be expected under normal operating conditions. Zone 2 is an area where an explosive gas atmosphere is not likely under normal operation but may occasionally occur. Equipment for zone 1 must be certified for category II 2G; for zone 2 category II 3G is sufficient. R. Stahl supplies products certified for both zones.
Which ATEX certificates are required for use in the offshore industry?
For offshore applications ATEX certificates (EU) and additional IECEx certificates are internationally recognized. What is the difference between Ex e (increased safety) and Ex d (flameproof enclosure)?
Ex e (increased safety) prevents explosion risk through enhanced safety measures that prevent sparks or high temperatures from occurring – suitable for terminal blocks, distribution boxes, and motors. Ex d (flameproof enclosure) encloses the electrical component in a housing that withstands an internal explosion and prevents flame or pressure from escaping – suitable for switches and motors in the most demanding zones.
Are R. Stahl LED luminaires suitable for zone 1?
Yes, R. Stahl has an extensive range of ATEX-certified LED luminaires for zone 1 (gas-sensitive environments) and zone 21 (dust-sensitive environments). LED luminaires offer longer service life (>50,000 hours), lower energy consumption, and better light output than traditional HID or fluorescent luminaires. Replacing existing explosion-proof luminaires with LED is also possible with approved replacement modules.

How do I correctly install ATEX equipment in a hazardous area?
ATEX installation requires the installer to be qualified and to work in accordance with EN 60079-14 (installation) and EN 60079-17 (inspection). Use only certified ATEX components for the relevant zone. Use approved Ex cable glands and correctly sealed cable entries. Document all installation data in an explosion protection document (EPD) per ATEX 2014/34/EU.
