Stahl

R. Stahl is a world leader in explosion protection (Ex technology) and supplies electrical components, systems, and services for safe use in hazardous areas (ATEX, IECEx). With over 130 years of experience designing and manufacturing explosion-protected equipment, R. Stahl delivers reliable solutions for the petrochemical, oil and gas, chemical, pharmaceutical, and food industries.

The R. Stahl range includes explosion-proof luminaires (LED and HID) for zones 1, 2, 21, and 22, explosion-proof switching and control stations (pushbuttons, switches, emergency stops), explosion-proof instrumentation enclosures, signal converters and interface modules, explosion-proof distribution systems (switchboards, distribution boards), cable entry and transit systems, and Ex safety barriers (Zener barriers, galvanic isolators).

R. Stahl's SERIES 6100 GRP enclosures in glass-fibre reinforced polyester are an industry standard for explosion-proof junction boxes and instrumentation housings. They combine exceptional lightweight design (up to 60% lighter than aluminum), high corrosion resistance, and the possibility of custom configurations. The enclosures are certified for ATEX zones 1/21 and 2/22 and IECEx.

R. Stahl's Ex-e (increased safety) and Ex-d (flameproof enclosure) protection types comply with ATEX directive 2014/34/EU, IECEx, NEC (North America), and other international standards. All products are tested and certified by DEKRA, PTB, BVS, and other recognized testing laboratories.

At Verkopershulp.nl we carry over 2,183 genuine R. Stahl products, including luminaires, switchgear, enclosures, signal converters, and cable glands. As an authorized distributor we guarantee fast delivery, technical support, and full warranty.

History

R. Stahl was founded in 1876 in Stuttgart, Germany as a machine factory. In the early 20th century the company specialized in explosion-proof electrical equipment for the emerging mining and chemical industries. Increasing safety legislation for hazardous environments in the mid-20th century drove enormous company growth. From the 1960s to the 1980s R. Stahl grew into a European leader in ATEX-certified equipment. The company invested heavily in certification and technical expertise, becoming a trusted partner for major international oil and gas companies and petrochemical businesses. Strategic acquisitions of specialized explosion protection companies strengthened the product portfolio. Today R. Stahl has its headquarters in Waldenburg, Germany and distributes its products in more than 100 countries. The company is publicly listed and is investing heavily in innovative Ex-LED lighting technology, smart explosion protection (digital monitoring), and IIoT integration for ATEX zones.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ATEX zone 1 and zone 2?
Zone 1 is an area where an explosive gas atmosphere is present or may periodically be expected under normal operating conditions. Zone 2 is an area where an explosive gas atmosphere is not likely under normal operation but may occasionally occur. Equipment for zone 1 must be certified for category II 2G; for zone 2 category II 3G is sufficient. R. Stahl supplies products certified for both zones.
Which ATEX certificates are required for use in the offshore industry?
For offshore applications ATEX certificates (EU) and additional IECEx certificates are internationally recognized. Offshore platforms often require additional certificates from classification societies such as DNV, Lloyd's Register, or Bureau Veritas. R. Stahl supplies products with all relevant certifications for offshore and marine applications.
How do I select the correct R. Stahl ATEX enclosure?
Select an ATEX enclosure based on: the ATEX zone (1, 2, 21, 22), protection method (Ex d, Ex e, Ex n, Ex ia), required IP class, material (GRP fibreglass, aluminum, stainless steel), and size for the components to be installed. R. Stahl provides comprehensive selection tools and technical support for correct enclosure selection.
What is the difference between Ex e (increased safety) and Ex d (flameproof enclosure)?
Ex e (increased safety) prevents explosion risk through enhanced safety measures that prevent sparks or high temperatures from occurring – suitable for terminal blocks, distribution boxes, and motors. Ex d (flameproof enclosure) encloses the electrical component in a housing that withstands an internal explosion and prevents flame or pressure from escaping – suitable for switches and motors in the most demanding zones.
Are R. Stahl LED luminaires suitable for zone 1?
Yes, R. Stahl has an extensive range of ATEX-certified LED luminaires for zone 1 (gas-sensitive environments) and zone 21 (dust-sensitive environments). LED luminaires offer longer service life (>50,000 hours), lower energy consumption, and better light output than traditional HID or fluorescent luminaires. Replacing existing explosion-proof luminaires with LED is also possible with approved replacement modules.
Are R. Stahl products IECEx certified for worldwide export applications?
Yes, most R. Stahl products are certified for both ATEX (Europe) and IECEx (internationally recognized in more than 50 countries). For export markets in the USA and Canada, additional NEC/CEC certificates are available through the R. Stahl North America division. This makes R. Stahl products suitable for use on all continents.
How do I correctly install ATEX equipment in a hazardous area?
ATEX installation requires the installer to be qualified and to work in accordance with EN 60079-14 (installation) and EN 60079-17 (inspection). Use only certified ATEX components for the relevant zone. Use approved Ex cable glands and correctly sealed cable entries. Document all installation data in an explosion protection document (EPD) per ATEX 2014/34/EU.
Does Verkopershulp.nl supply R. Stahl Zener barriers for intrinsically safe circuits?
Yes, we supply genuine R. Stahl Zener barriers and galvanic isolators (IS interfaces) for intrinsically safe signal circuits (Ex ia/ib) in zones 0, 1, and 2. These barriers limit the energy flowing to the hazardous area so ignition cannot occur. We also supply accompanying documentation for use in Ex-ia circuits with system certification.
